Read “Lab 3: Biodiversity.” This lab will allow you to investigate how various organisms alter their environments. Additionally, it will allow you to assess the health of ecosystems based upon their biodiversity. Then, you will utilize this information and your eScience lab kit to complete Demonstration 1 and Experiment 1 on the Week Three Lab Reporting Form. Make sure to complete all of the following items before submission:

  1. Read through the introductory material.
  2. Perform Demonstration 1: Interdependence of Species using your eScience lab manual and kit.  
  3. Complete Table 1 and answer Post Lab Questions 1 through 3 in complete sentences on the Week Three Lab Reporting Form.
  4. Record your hypothesis for Experiment 1 on the Week Three Lab Reporting Form.
  5. Complete Experiment 1: Diversity of Plants using your eScience lab manual and kit.
  6. Complete Table 2 and answer Post Lab Questions 1 through 4 in complete sentences on the Week Three Lab Reporting Form.

Submit the Week Three Lab Reporting Form via Waypoint. The document does not need to include a title page or other APA formatting; however, any outside sources utilized in your answers must be referenced in proper APA format as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

1.      Develop a hypothesis on which pot you believe will contain the highest biodiversity.


Hypothesis = If I scatter the seed mixture for the experiment, then I will end up with more ryegrass in both pots. This was denied because I ended up with more Zinnia in both pots instead. I thought ryegrass would be prominent in both pots because they looked like simple plants.




2.      Based on the results of your experiment, would you reject or accept the hypothesis that you produced in question 1?  Explain how you determined this.

3.      If each pot was a sample you found in a group of wildflowers, would you determine based on the diversity of flowers that the ecosystem is healthy?  Why or why not.


Answer = Yes I would because not every type of flower need the same thing to grow. So I would assume the ecosystem would have to be healthy to still flourish a diversity of different types of flowers grouped together.




4.      How does biodiversity contribute to the overall health of an ecosystem?  Provide specific examples and utilize at least one scholarly resource to back your answer.


Answer = Biodiversity increases ecosystem productivity. If the ecosystem is productive, then its health is well off. There are plants that that have certain ingredients we need for medications in the United States. So if biodiversity (diversity of life in an area) is abundant, then many people, insects, and other plants benefit from it.
